Communication Strategies
for a Succssful Holiday Season

You love your child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for their many gifts and talents.

Sometimes, however, you might feel frustrated, sad, alone, or defeated when it comes to parenting your child with ASD. You might even feel as if you have tried EVERYTHING, but nothing seems to work!

You are not alone.

If this describes your family, or someone you love, I am here to help and created The CALM Compass with them in mind.

My goal for The CALM Compass is to put positive and proactive parenting strategies in the hands of people who need it the most – parents and caregivers of people with ASD.

Your ASD Parenting Journey

The CALM Compass is a practical parenting tool that has four directions for you to choose (CONNECT, ARTICULATE, LIFT and MOVE). Each of these directions points you towards specific skills and strategies you will use in everyday situations. For instance, how to respond to a meltdown; how to prepare and plan for problems; or how to help mediate challenging transitions.

I’ve distilled 30 years of experience working with people with ASD and their parents to create these parenting strategies and easy-to-use tools in a convenient online learning program.

CONNECT

CONNECT is composed of 3 sections: Relate, Respond & Regulate. Each is designed to help you, as parents and caregivers, on your ASD Parenting Journey.

We want so desperately to help children with ASD through challenging situations. Parenting children with neurodiversity calls for strategies that work well and help you respond effectively in times of stress.

The lessons in the direction of CONNECT will show you an inside look at the approach I use with parents I work with.

The more you understand your child with ASD, the better you’ll be able to help support and strengthen their coping skills for better

ARTICULATE

Help your child learn to move from a challenging situation to a positive experience.

ARTICULATE is composed of three sections: Reflect, Reframe and Review.

Communicating clearly and effectively is essential in any parent-child relationship, and with your child with ASD, it can prove especially challenging.

It’s important for your child to see situations differently and from someone else’s point of view. But, how do you help them get there?

As a parent, it can be easy to react instead of truly respond. We also want to avoid words that are negative or pejorative when clarifying your child’s challenges or frustrations.

You’ve tried this.

It may have worked in the short run to diffuse a situation, but if you are reading this, I know that you are here because you are craving a better approach. A clearer approach that will set your child up for success beyond adolescence.

I know that you work at this each and every day to give your child the best opportunities in their life.

It takes a village.
I created The CALM Compass online parenting program to support you.

LIFT

Help support, encourage and motivate your child.

LIFT contains three strategies for your ASD Parenting Journey: Redirect, Reassure and Reframe.

  • Redirect is useful to help your child go from negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors towards an activity that may be better suited for them to get unstuck. It helps prevent a power struggle.
  • Reassure helps your child overcome challenges through inspiration. Remind them of their many talents when they need it the most.
  • Reinforce helps to encourage positive coping strategies, communication skills and social skills.

Wouldn't it be nice to...

The more you learn how to communicate clearly with your child with ASD,
the better you’ll be able to help them succeed.
